GRADUATE PROFILES
We caught up with some of our alumni and asked them some testing questions.
Lexi Clare, theatre producer and actress, based in London
"Other applicants for the role had far more experience in directing, but I was able to have a really brilliant discussion with the director on the play itself and the way tragedies are typically staged. Having that background and interest in Classical Studies was what got me hired!"
"By developing my knowledge and enthusiasm, my strengths became apparent too. The more I studied Classics, the more I enjoyed it and saw great results. That snowball effect was a great motivator to go back to university and study Classics year after year."
Lauren Buckeridge, editorial assistant, NZ Listener
"I liked my studies because they were always interesting, and were something I was passionate about. I feel very glad that I chose to focus on something that I loved doing, rather than choosing a degree purely for pragmatic reasons. This definitely enriched my quality of life while at university, as studying was never a chore for me."
I work as an analyst in the NZ Government's defence and national security sector - that's why they can't show you a picture of me...
Miriam Bissett, Tertiary Counsellor
“I have learnt to deal with people from all walks of life. By studying society through ancient art, literature, and history I have gained invaluable skills in understanding how people respond to various situations. If I was more sentimental I would call it empathy, but in a nod to honesty I shall instead say that I learnt psychology, politics, and management in one major.”
"The subject matter never ceases to provide me with new discoveries and has the incredible characteristic of being relevant to every situation. I especially love the lecturers, tutors, and my peers. Classicists (and Ancient Historians and ancient linguists) are a magnificent breed. We need more of them!"
What do you like the most about your studies?
"Getting to read a broad range of texts that cover everything from dirty jokes to fundamental questions on the nature of the human condition."
Neha Patel
